Hunting of markhoor goats is mainly organized in the hunting area “Sangovchyan” of the company “Oxus Holding”, which is located in the Shamsiddin Shahin district. The goat is one of the rare animals in the mountains of Tajikistan, which is included in the “Red Book of Tajikistan”. The world’s largest population of the ibex, popularly known as the “snakehead”, is preserved in the Dashtidjum Nature Reserve, located in southern Tajikistan.
Tajikistan is home to one of the most famous species of markhoor goats. It is distinguished by the large size of its horns. The horns of the male goat are between 80 and 144 cm long, which makes the length of the horns a record. It is in the Sangwochiyeong Hunting Area that these kinds of Morkhur are observed. The weight of the females reaches 30-60 kg. They have long sturdy legs and heavy, borer-like horns that are 6 to 25 cm long. The size and shape of the snake horns are different.
The color of the Morkhur is brown, gray or grayish-white. The male has a beard up to 30 cm long. The fur varies depending on the season; it is long and soft in winter and relatively short and thin in summer. The Morkhur is a typical mountain animal, living at an altitude of 1600-2800 meters above sea level. The meat of the vinorhoea goat is considered by scientists to be useful for treating a number of diseases.
